the Victorian Town of Quirm in OSGrid

I had not visited other grids in a while. A couple of days ago I paid a brief visit to OSGrid. It was not the best moment - some server updates were going on and it was not very stable, but still I was able to walk around the lovely Victorian town of Quirm and to take some nice pictures that I'd like to share.

Quirm is a lovely place. Beautifully built and textured and definitely worth a visit. Some known Victorian names dwell there and there is even a Booksmythe extension :)

If you have a OSGrid account (if not, get one :) ) visit there

Have fun

OSGrid

I have just realized that I haven't blogged in quite a long time. SL has been laggy enough to frustrate all my attempts of sailing, so, my next stage in my mainland exploration (from Corsica to Gaeta) is still on hold. I have spent some time trying to grasp the secrets of physical vehicles but so far the objects I have scripted do not work yet the way they are supposed to, so I guess I need some more time there. I have also worked a bit on my test blog, experimenting with alternate templates. I think I will move to a three-columns template soon.

I think that the most significant event in the past days has taken place outside SL, in one of the Opensim grids: OSGrid. I have spent some time in other grids in the past, exploring there. I have spent quite some time in Openlife, even if I have not been able to log in lately because of some issue with the version of the viewer I am using (I have downloaded the latest but it still does not like it). I had been in OSGrid a few times, but not quite as much as in Openlife. It looked even less developed to me at that time, but I confess I did not put much effort in a good exploration.

Following Mykyl's opening of a Booksmythe extension in that world, I decided to go back there and have a look. I was quite surprised by the level of development. The Booksmythe is in Quirm, a little victorian village, wonderfully built and with great ambitions for its future.

The buildings have been created with great skills and original textures and the overall feeling of the place is great !

The area is built around a nice lagoon and I think I need to find a boat there soon. And if I do not find one I will have to build it ! (see the scripting exercises mentioned above) :D I wonder if there is wind in OSGrid ;)

After this first exploration I was invited by Morris Vig to visit the sim of Teravus Plaza, where he has a home.

I went there and I was as impressed. Another nice village with classy buildings in a beautiful landscape.

I like that the Hippo Viewer , used to access OSgrid, has the Torley's windlight settings installed by default. There are so many more options for great settings and atmospheres, like the one I used for these shots.

I need to explore more. These worlds are a bit lonely at times, because you rarely meet people there, but when you do, thay usually are so involved in what they are building that their enthusiasm warms the heart.

I'll keep you informed. Take care :)

the unveiling of the water witch

It was the 21st of July 2007. I had joined SL for a few months but I was not very active. I was mostly exploring SL in search of book related places. I was a homeless newbie, wearing freebie jeans and t-shirt, who took the AV to sleep on a bench on Book Island before logging off :)
That day, using the search tool looking for books I was redirected to a place called the Booksmythe. I ended in Faeria and my SL experience was changed forever :)

As soon as I rezzed there I met Aianna and Mykyl for the very first time. They were organizing a big event that same day : the presentation of Aianna’s first book of her fantasy saga: The Valley of the Ivory Swan: Warrior Princess. That evening I went back and I was witness to a huge success. Tens of people assembled in Faeria and other sims connected in streaming to accommodate more audience listening to Aianna reading excerpts from her book, and in the following days the event was blogged all over.

In the months following that first event Aianna’s readings have been taken place in many places: Faeria, Alurel, Winterfell, the Guild of UK Writers, and others, some of which no longer exist. Aianna is a fantastic storyteller : listening to her voice telling her tales is a magical experience.

Now, after weeks of hard work, Aianna has finally imported into SL the second book of her saga : the Water Witch.

The book will make its SL debult in Faeria Village, Huin on the 15th of August, 4-6 pm SLT. Aianna Oh will be reading excerpts from the book live on stream. The event will also be streamed in five other sims where Aianna has been reading in the past year:

  • Alurel Market
  • INKsters on Cookie Island
  • The Library in Winterfell Palace
  • The Stone Circle in Milk Wood (Scotland Plarmigan)
  • The Garden of the Muse in Dreyfus

Aianna will share the stage with CelticMaidenWarrior Lancaster a magical voice and charming personality, she is well worth hearing as well.
Reading and singing will alternate during the two hours of the event.

I hope to see a huge happy crowd listening to these gifted Ladies. I personally look forward

So long

W

P.S. Since Faeria is a fantasy themed region, between that first meeting and the reading, that took place a few hours later, I went looking for fantasy clothes. Again I started using the search tool and, being an avid reader of George RR Martin, I choose a shop called Pretty Magic in a region intriguingly called Winterfell. I visited the shop and I stepped out of it discovering the SL Winterfell, where my home has been ever since.

21st of July 2007 … a truly remarkable day in my SL experience :)
